Our Team

Meet the SmithScapers.

SmithScapes is built on the passion, dedication and expertise of our extraordinary team. The cumulative experience and knowledge across the craft of landscape gardening is extensive.

Here are the people who get things done around here.

Dale Smith

Managing Director and Landscaper

Dale is the ultimate eyes and ears of SmithScapes. Utilising his extensive industry knowledge to guide projects is second nature to him. Having started in the sector at age 12, he’s been passionate about landscaping for many years.

Following High School he gained qualifications in horticulture and built his experience in plant propagation and cultivation for a broad range of landscaping projects – from dairy farm conversions to maintaining townhouse gardens and lawns on a regular basis.

Initially Dale’s business was a part-time operation, but demand grew quickly and it wasn’t long before he had his own full-time business. SmithScapes has evolved remarkably over the last twelve years with the addition of new services, more team members and a growing family, but Dale continues to keep it flourishing.

Whitney Smith

Office Manager

As the keeper of SmithScapes’ books, wife to Dale and a mother of two, Whitney knows how to run a tight ship.

Whitney keeps the team in check ensuring i’s are dotted, t’s are crossed and budgets are kept under control. She’s constantly looking for ways for the business to grow and serve clients better. You’ll also see her out and about freighting plants and supplies to our projects across the region.

Whitney also brings knowledge from the creative side – as an experienced dressmaker and interior design specialist, she offers valuable design insight on detail-oriented projects.

Nathan Hurst

Landscaper

Nathan has been with the SmithScapes team for ten years. He’s completed an apprenticeship in Horticulture and qualified in Advanced Landscaping through the Horticulture Industry Training Organisation.

A natural with hands-on projects and with wide experience in the construction sector, Nathan loves a challenge and is always willing to dive head-first into a project with his positive, can-do attitude.

Sam O’Brien

Landscaper

Sam joined us in 2020 from a specialist consumer product manufacturer – so he knows what it takes to achieve a consistent and quality result.

Sam is working through his Horticulture qualifications through the Horticulture Industry Training Organisation and is enjoying the hands-on and outdoor environment that SmithScapes work provides.

We’re here to help.

From the smallest courtyard through to the grandest home, farm or commercial property anywhere in Mid Canterbury, we are passionate about gardens of all shapes, sizes, styles and maturity.

In trusting SmithScapes, you can be assured that your investment is being nurtured, protected and cared for by the right people.
